Back at camp, enjoy a barbecue with fellow backpackers, snuggle up round the camp fire or watch a movie in the TV room. Keep an eye out for kangaroos in the woods, Blade the dog (who is on heat) and any other creepy crawlies that might wonder into the camp.

Visit the Twelve Apostles in Australia

[ 0 ] October 22, 2011

Planning to do the Great Ocean Road? Don’t miss the Twelve Apostles in Port Campbell National Park.

These magnificant rock formations were once part of the mainland but years of harsh weather conditions gradually eroded the limestone forming caves.

The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 50m high were left isolated from the shore. Now they stand proud and are a major tourist attraction.

How to get there

You can reach the Twelve Apostles from the Great Ocean Road. If you go direct from Melbourne you’re looking at a 5-6 hour drive. We recommend a stopover in Lawn – a lovely little seaside town with a couple of hostels – so you can take your time and enjoy the views.

Best time to visit

Dawn! Get there as early as possible to avoid the throngs of tourist buses (trust us, there’s hundreds). It’s worth the early start we promise.

Ryanair to remove toilets on flights

[ 0 ] October 13, 2011

Ryanair has announced plans to reduce the number of bathrooms on its planes to make way for more seats.

Chief Executive Michael O’Leary wants to ‘recertify’ the Boeing aircraft to enable 6 extra seats to be installed – leaving just one bathroom between 200 customers.

‘We very rarely use all three toilets on board our aircraft,’ he tells the Daily Mail. ‘[It] would fundamentally lower air fares by about 5 per cent for all passengers – cutting £2 from a typical £40 ticket.’

Despite Ryanair’s cut-throat tactics, it’s thought over 75million people will travel with the budget airline this year. Get ready to cross your legs!

Save money abroad with our top tips and advice

* Choose a card with no ATM fees

Travelling to a remote corner of the world? Many places won’t accept card payments so it’s important to choose a card with no ATM fees as you’ll be withdrawing on a regular basis.

* Find out the exchange rate

Banks often charge a fee to convert money into local currency. If you’re using a Barclays debit card abroad you may be charged a 2.99% foreign exchange charge. Not good if you’re on a budget.

* Check you can use your card online/ in store

Going on a shopping spree? Need to pay for a last-minute flight? Check there are no foreign purchase fees when using your prepaid card online or in store.

* Keep up-to-date with the latest deals

Moneysupermarket.com is a fantastic website to use if you’re not sure where to start. Not only does it keep an updated list of the best cards to use, it has exclusive deals and offers that are perfect for travellers.

* Ask the right questions

Does it cost money to ‘load’ the card? What happens if you lose it? Are there charges if you stop using the card? All these are important things to consider so give the provider a call to clear things up.

Find out how to get the best deal on your trip and bag yourself a good exchange rate before you leave. Got a question? Get in touch via Twitter or Facebook!

How to budget for your trip – 6 extra costs to consider

[ 1 ] September 29, 2011

Finding cheap flights is usually the easy part when it comes to budgeting for your holiday. The key is avoiding all those hidden extras like airport transfers and bank fees.

Below is a list of 6 common charges to prepare for when planning your next adventure.

1. Airport transfers

Train, bus or car? Getting to the airport can cost a small fortune, so it’s important to pick your travel method wisely. Parking at airports is often the most convenient but also the most expensive option, running up charges of £136 for just 3 days. Public transport is usually the most affordable option – especially if you book in advance or have a railcard.

Visit cheapflights.co.uk and book your next trip today!

2. Pre-booked seats

If you’re travelling in a group, paying for priority boarding can add up. Instead, try to arrive at the departure gate as early as possible so that you’ll be the first in line to request extra leg room/seats together etc.

3. Bank charges

Find out how much you’ll be charged and be clever about which card you use. If you pay with a debit card you may get stung with a loaded exchange rate, a cash withdrawal fee and interest charges, too. If you must use a debit card, always take out the maximum amount of cash. Paying with a credit card will give you free credit, as long as you clear your balance in full and use consumer protection. Using a pre-loaded currency card will help to keep your budget in check and you may save on those airline booking charges too.

4. International calls

Keep in mind when you cross the border, by land or by sea, your cell is using data internationally – and you’re getting charged. Give your mobile service provider a call before you leave to review your terms and switch to an international plan to avoid hefty charges.

5. Travel insurance

Read the small print! Will you be covered if your flights are affected by an ash cloud? If your holiday company goes bust? Also, make sure you’re covered for everything you want to do e.g sky diving, abseiling, kayaking etc If not, you could end up spending thousands of pounds if something goes wrong.

6. Car rentals

Never assume that the estimated cost you’re quoted is what you’ll spend in total. So many people forget to budget for extras such as fuel, insurance, tolls, parking, and insuring an extra driver on your current plan. Decide whether the additional outlay of renting a car is affordable or necessary.

Lush shampoo bar - Beauty tips for travellers

Beauty tips for travellers

[ 0 ] August 31, 2011

*** Boys, look away now. This is definitely one for the girls! ***

Still want to look hot while you’re travelling? You’re not alone. Read on for our top tips and advice to looking good on the road.

1. Get a haircut before you leave

Beauty tips for travellers

Chances are you won’t get a haircut for months so book a last-minute appointment. If possible, leave your hair long. It’s much easier to manage and you can tie it up when it gets too hot.

Blessed with curls? Find out how to combat frizzy hair here.

2. Buy a good moisturiser

A good moisturiser is essential! Buy one that’s lightweight, easily absorbed and has a high SPF. We loved NIVEA Essentials day cream – perfect for throwing in the backpack and it won’t leave your face shiny.

3. Ditch the foundation

You might think you can’t live without it but foundation is a waste of time when you’re jumping into the ocean, rolling around in the sand and hiking up to Machu Picchu.

Instead go for Tea Tree Oil Facial Blotting Tissues. Not only do they combat shiny skin, they’ll help control blemishes and leave your skin looking fresh.

4. Invest in a Lush shampoo bar

Shampoo and conditioner is easy to buy when you’re away but lots of travellers find Lush shampoo bars useful. They lasts for ages and are great for taking on treks as they double up as soap.

5. Get an eyeliner with built-in sharpener

Nothing’s more annoying than a blunt eyeliner pencil when you don’t have a sharpener. So buy one with a built-in sharpener in the lid like this Clarins Eyeliner Pencil.

6. Leave nail polish at home

Nail polish chips too easily – especially when you’re in and out of the sea. Instead, keep nails short and sheen. It will save you heaps of time and effort.

7. Keep your eyebrows trim

Looking fresh-faced is hard when your eyebrows are out on control so buy a pair of small tweezers. Little and often is the key here – try and do them every few days.

8. Drink lots of water

Late nights and too much alcohol can leave your skin looking dull and lifeless so drink lots of water to keep hydrated. Aim for 2 liters per day – more if your on the beach or in humid conditions.

Snorkelling trips in Caye Caulker, Belize

Snorkelling trips in Caye Caulker, Belize

[ 7 ] January 27, 2011

Caye Caulker boasts some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. Tours leave the island every day, offering 3-day sailing trips, sunset cruises and countless opportunities for snorkelling.

We loved the Raggamuffin tours, which can be booked on the seafront. The Hol Chan snorkelling trip is one of the best we’ve seen and costs 90 Belize dollars for a full day. Not only will you visit 3 of the best snorkelling destinations in Caye Caulker, all food and drink is included so you can enjoy cerviche for lunch, cocktails at sunset and fruit in the morning.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the most popular snorkelling destinations on the island. Since no fishing is allowed, it’s teaming with schoolmaster snappers, blue-striped grunts, moray eels and angelfish. You’ll stop here for about an hour and you’re free to explore as much as you like.

Shark and Ray Alley

Always wanted to swim with sharks? Now’s your chance. Located 3 miles south of the marine park, Shark and Ray Alley guarantees a close encounter. Nurse Sharks swim in and out of the darkness and stingrays hover above the seabed. Keep an eye out for the huge barracudas – they seem to enjoy catching you off guard.

Coral Gardens

The Coral Gardens, 2 and a half miles west of Shark and Ray Alley, are a brilliant way to end the trip. Guides will accompany you as you swim with moray eels, dive into underwater caves and snorkel with schools of fish. Be careful not to touch any of the coral – or kick it with your flippers. You’ll be called ‘Coral Killer’ for the rest of the trip…
