Relax at the Peninsula Hot Springs

[ 1 ] June 7, 2012

Visiting the Mornington Peninsula? Don’t miss a trip to the Peninsula Hot Springs for a spa experience that will take your breath away.

Relax in the hydrotherapy pools, work up a sweat in the sauna or retreat to the darkness of the cave pool to enjoy the tranquility. There’s even a hilltop hideaway (pictured) with 360 degree views across the countryside – perfect on a cold winter morning.

Hill-Top Pool - Peninsula Hot Springs - Australia

How it works

The natural spring water flows from an aquifer 637m below the ground. It rises to within 10m of the surface before getting pumped into over 20 pools across the complex.

It is this process that ensures the water remains a balmy 37C – 43C. The heat helps induce blood flow and sweating, both of which release toxins and assist the healing process. The springs also contain natural minerals such as bicarbonate, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

Best time to visit

Avoid the crowds and visit the hot springs Tuesday – Thursday. Better still, get here at the crack of dawn (or when it opens at 7.30am) to enjoy the peace and quiet. Fancy a moonlit dip? As the night draws in, the lights cast eerie shadows over the bubbling pools. What better way to spend a romantic evening?

Hot Springs by night - Peninsula Hot Springs, Australia

Prices

Early Bird prices (before 10am) vary from $15 to $20; standard prices vary from $20 to $35; and and kids prices vary from $10 to 20. Fancy an upgrade? Bathe in the tranquil Spa Dreaming Centre pools. Price includes use of a locker, towel and a fluffy white bath robe – a nice touch in the cooler months. Entry $50-$60 ($30 when you book in for a spa treatment).

Buy tickets online and don’t forget to check out the spa packages for more exclusive deals.

Nearby Accommodation

Nearby accommodation includes plush golf resort Moonah Links and the luxurious Hummingbird Eco retreat based in Red Hill, a 20-minute drive away.

Icelandic volcano sparks ash cloud fears

[ 0 ] October 14, 2011

Remember the ash cloud? Well, another volcano in Iceland is threatening to erupt – and experts fear it could dwarf last year’s natural disaster.

Seismologists are watching rumblings beneath a volcano named Katla on the southern edge of Iceland where several small earthquakes have been detected.

‘It is definitely showing signs of restlessness,’ Pall Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, tells the Daily Mail.

Worringly, Katla has a larger magma chamber than Eyjafjallajokull – the volcano responsible for last year’s ash cloud – and experts fear it could cause havoc if it erupts.

Disaster officials are now preparing evacuation plans and have set aside temporary housing but it’s thought residents would only have about an hour to flee…

* Choose a card with no ATM fees

Travelling to a remote corner of the world? Many places won’t accept card payments so it’s important to choose a card with no ATM fees as you’ll be withdrawing on a regular basis.

* Find out the exchange rate

Banks often charge a fee to convert money into local currency. If you’re using a Barclays debit card abroad you may be charged a 2.99% foreign exchange charge. Not good if you’re on a budget.

* Check you can use your card online/ in store

Going on a shopping spree? Need to pay for a last-minute flight? Check there are no foreign purchase fees when using your prepaid card online or in store.

* Keep up-to-date with the latest deals

Moneysupermarket.com is a fantastic website to use if you’re not sure where to start. Not only does it keep an updated list of the best cards to use, it has exclusive deals and offers that are perfect for travellers.

* Ask the right questions

Does it cost money to ‘load’ the card? What happens if you lose it? Are there charges if you stop using the card? All these are important things to consider so give the provider a call to clear things up.

Find out how to get the best deal on your trip and bag yourself a good exchange rate before you leave. Got a question? Get in touch via Twitter or Facebook!

Lush shampoo bar - Beauty tips for travellers

Beauty tips for travellers

[ 0 ] August 31, 2011

*** Boys, look away now. This is definitely one for the girls! ***

Still want to look hot while you’re travelling? You’re not alone. Read on for our top tips and advice to looking good on the road.

1. Get a haircut before you leave

Get perfect beach hair with Global Keratin | image from Studiodnasalon.com

Beauty tips for travellers

Chances are you won’t get a haircut for months so book a last-minute appointment. If possible, leave your hair long. It’s much easier to manage and you can tie it up when it gets too hot.

Blessed with curls? Find out how to combat frizzy hair here.

2. Buy a good moisturiser

A good moisturiser is essential! Buy one that’s lightweight, easily absorbed and has a high SPF. We loved NIVEA Essentials day cream – perfect for throwing in the backpack and it won’t leave your face shiny.

3. Ditch the foundation

You might think you can’t live without it but foundation is a waste of time when you’re jumping into the ocean, rolling around in the sand and hiking up to Machu Picchu.

Instead go for Tea Tree Oil Facial Blotting Tissues. Not only do they combat shiny skin, they’ll help control blemishes and leave your skin looking fresh.

4. Invest in a Lush shampoo bar

Shampoo and conditioner is easy to buy when you’re away but lots of travellers find Lush shampoo bars useful. They lasts for ages and are great for taking on treks as they double up as soap.

5. Get an eyeliner with built-in sharpener

Nothing’s more annoying than a blunt eyeliner pencil when you don’t have a sharpener. So buy one with a built-in sharpener in the lid like this Clarins Eyeliner Pencil.

6. Leave nail polish at home

Nail polish chips too easily – especially when you’re in and out of the sea. Instead, keep nails short and sheen. It will save you heaps of time and effort.

7. Keep your eyebrows trim

Looking fresh-faced is hard when your eyebrows are out on control so buy a pair of small tweezers. Little and often is the key here – try and do them every few days.

8. Drink lots of water

Late nights and too much alcohol can leave your skin looking dull and lifeless so drink lots of water to keep hydrated. Aim for 2 liters per day – more if your on the beach or in humid conditions.

Cango Caves: the Adventure Tour

[ 2 ] August 24, 2011

Looking for an adventure in South Africa? The Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn are sure to get the adrenaline pumping.

The underground maze, which was first discovered by local farmer Jacobus van Zyl, is a fascinating combination of limestone masterpieces, hanging crystal gardens and claustrophobic tunnels.

Pictures: Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn, South Africa - Cango Caves pictures - Fabulous Travel Guide

Pictures: Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn, South Africa

One minute you’re wandering through vast chambers taking snaps of towering stalactites; the next you’re squeezing through a hole in the wall just 30cm high.

Types of tour

There’s only one way to see the Cango Caves – and that’s with the Adventure Tour. This takes around 90 minutes to complete and starts at the same point as the Standard Tour but goes deeper into the caves.

You’ll crawl through The Tunnel of Love (a low passageway some 74cm high), climb slippery ladders, squeeze into The Coffin and even experience the notorious Devil’s Chimney, a steep shaft about 45 centimetres wide which leads upwards for 3.5 metres!

Prices: Adults: 90ZAR (£7.70); children: 55ZAR (£4.70).

TOP TIP If you are at all claustrophobic then do the Standard Tour. It can get very humid in the some of the chambers and some guests have complained of shortness of breath,

Looking for more adrenaline-pumping adventures in South Africa? Why not go cage diving with Great Whites or get up close and personal to lions and elephants on safari?
