How to save money on last-minute flights

[ 2 ] September 10, 2010

Cheap flights are often too good to be true – with taxes and charges often bumping up the price at the last minute.

Sadly, airlines are getting sneakier at adding these on – so you have to extra diligent when booking your flight. Follow my top 5 tips on getting the cheapest possible deal, and you could save £50!*

1) Book directly though the airline

Find out which airlines fly to your chosen destination. It may seem like an obvious starting point, but you’d be surprised how many people book through third-party websites. Once you’ve sused out your options, visit each website, compare prices and book direct.

2) Select your flights

Consider flying at an unsociable hour – as these flights are the cheapest. It’s also worth looking at single fares, rather than ‘returns’ as you can pick and choose times and be more flexible on dates.

3) Check that no insurance has been added on

Monarch automatically adds on a £10 insurance fee to the booking, without even asking you. You physically have to choose ‘no insurance’ to remove it.

4) De-select the in-flight meals.

Hot meals cost from £6.50 each way. This is an unnecessary luxury on short-haul flights and will save you £13 in total if you choose to opt out. Airlines usually add this on automatically – so make sure you double check.

5) Be savvy about baggage

Monarch charges £9.99 per bag, each way. That’s £20 added onto your flight in the blink of an eye! Instead, consider hand luggage. It’s surprising how much you can fit in (56cm x 45cm x25cm) – and you’re allowed 10kg.

6) Don’t pre-book your seats (unless you want extra leg room or have other special requirements)

This costs £7.50 each way and is an unnecessary cost! As long as you all check in together you will be seated together where possible.

Monarch cleverly makes it look like you have to book a seat, but ignore this and continue to the check out.

Total amount saved: £58*
£20 on luggage
£15 on pre-booked seats
10 on travel insurance
£13 on in-flight meals

Booking flights – the 8 week rule

[ 4 ] September 9, 2010

Thinking about booking a last-minute holiday? Apparently there’s a knack to bagging those cheap flights – and it’s all about timing.

According to a new study published in the latest edition of The Economic Journal, the best time to book your flights is exactly 8 weeks before departure.

It is thought that booking too far in advance can be a gamble – as unforeseen circumstances can affect the flight, and leaving it until the last minute often proves costly.

And don’t bother getting out of bed early to bag those deals – apparently the best time to book is in the afternoon. So grab yourself a cuppa, sit back and let science do all the hard work!

Oh, and if you get stuck, just remember this formula: ∏A =gUG + min(k – g, (1 – g)(1 – r))

Easy, right?

How to book a round-the-world trip

[ 3 ] July 20, 2010

Getting itchy feet? Desperate to travel? Book a round-the-world trip and get away from the doom and gloom of England’s debt problems and rainy winters!

1)  Where do you want to go?

Whether you want to swim with sharks in South Africa, laze away the days on white sand beaches in Thailand or hike the Inca Trail in Peru, there’s never been a better time to book a life-changing trip.

Once you have decided what you want to achieve, it’s important to do your research. You may feel like booking the first flights you see, but, trust me, DON’T. There are loads of good deals to be had, and you won’t gain anything by rushing into it.

Phone up travel agencies that specialise in round-the-world flights and have them talk you through the different options. I compared STA Travel, Round the World Experts and Travel Nation.

2) Weigh up the pros and cons

Once you have quotes from all the agencies you’ve visited, weigh up the pros and cons and ask yourself these questions:

* Is this a reputable agency?
* How much do they charge to change flights
* Will I be able to speak to an English-speaking person if I have problems when I’m away?

Once you have decided on a company to go with, tell them about the different quotes you’ve been offered. You never know they might be able to cut you a deal! This is also the time to ask all those niggling questions – however silly you may think they are!

3) Finalising dates

TOP TIP: When you are finalising the details of your trip, allow yourself a day or two to do some research.

* Go to the library and get out the most recent edition of the Lonely Planet and read up on the places you’re visiting. You might find there’s more to do than you’d originally thought – or, perhaps not enough.

* Make a list of what you want to do in each place, jotting down how long you think you’ll need to stay.

* Buy a diary and pencil in the dates – this will give you a clearer view of how much time you have.

When you’re happy, go back to the travel agent and start booking those flights. If you are covering vast areas of land – such as South America, it might be worth considering internal flights as this will save you time and money in the long run.
