How to get a journalism job – tips from an editor!

[ 1 ] September 13, 2011

Looking for journalism jobs? Dream of becoming a travel writer? Follow our top tips and advice on getting your first job.

1. Get as much work experience as possible

Work experience might seem like a waste of time (it’s unpaid, your stuck on coffee duty, nobody takes any notice of you etc ) BUT it’s pretty much the only way you’ll ever get a job. Editors rarely give away internships to people without experience. The more the better.

2. Make contacts

So you’ve bagged a work experience placement. Now’s the time to work hard and get noticed! Stay late, offer to help the features desk with research, do extra work and chat to as many people as possible. Magazines and websites get hundreds of interns through the door every year, so make sure they remember you.

3. Don’t let the editor forget you

Getting a job in journalism is hard – so stay in touch with your contacts. Drop the editor a thank you message, email the features desk or befriend the editorial assistant on Facebook.

4. Get your work published

Whether it’s writing reviews for a local magazine, creating your own blog or contributing to travel forums, it’s important to get your work published. Seeing your name in print will help boost your CV.

5. Create a fabulous CV

Editors get hundreds of CVs so make yours stand out. Get creative with the design, include examples of your work or even send a video message! Remember to follow it up with a phone call if you haven’t heard back within a week.

See more tips on creating the perfect CV and finding first jobs. Got a question? Get in touch via our Facebook page – we’re more than happy to help.

Lush shampoo bar - Beauty tips for travellers

Beauty tips for travellers

[ 0 ] August 31, 2011

*** Boys, look away now. This is definitely one for the girls! ***

Still want to look hot while you’re travelling? You’re not alone. Read on for our top tips and advice to looking good on the road.

1. Get a haircut before you leave

Get perfect beach hair with Global Keratin | image from Studiodnasalon.com

Beauty tips for travellers

Chances are you won’t get a haircut for months so book a last-minute appointment. If possible, leave your hair long. It’s much easier to manage and you can tie it up when it gets too hot.

Blessed with curls? Find out how to combat frizzy hair here.

2. Buy a good moisturiser

A good moisturiser is essential! Buy one that’s lightweight, easily absorbed and has a high SPF. We loved NIVEA Essentials day cream – perfect for throwing in the backpack and it won’t leave your face shiny.

3. Ditch the foundation

You might think you can’t live without it but foundation is a waste of time when you’re jumping into the ocean, rolling around in the sand and hiking up to Machu Picchu.

Instead go for Tea Tree Oil Facial Blotting Tissues. Not only do they combat shiny skin, they’ll help control blemishes and leave your skin looking fresh.

4. Invest in a Lush shampoo bar

Shampoo and conditioner is easy to buy when you’re away but lots of travellers find Lush shampoo bars useful. They lasts for ages and are great for taking on treks as they double up as soap.

5. Get an eyeliner with built-in sharpener

Nothing’s more annoying than a blunt eyeliner pencil when you don’t have a sharpener. So buy one with a built-in sharpener in the lid like this Clarins Eyeliner Pencil.

6. Leave nail polish at home

Nail polish chips too easily – especially when you’re in and out of the sea. Instead, keep nails short and sheen. It will save you heaps of time and effort.

7. Keep your eyebrows trim

Looking fresh-faced is hard when your eyebrows are out on control so buy a pair of small tweezers. Little and often is the key here – try and do them every few days.

8. Drink lots of water

Late nights and too much alcohol can leave your skin looking dull and lifeless so drink lots of water to keep hydrated. Aim for 2 liters per day – more if your on the beach or in humid conditions.

Got frizzy hair? Find out how to combat the curls! Need more advice? Follow us on Twitter or become a Facebook fan!
