[ 0 ] October 11, 2011

Mountain biker Evan van der Spuy got the shock of his life when an antelope crashed into him during a race in South Africa.

The cyclist was competing in the Time Freight MTB Express at Albert Falls Dam when a red hartebeest charged across the plain and knocked him to the ground.

Travelling to South Africa - Fabulous Travel Guide

Is South Africa safe? Tips for travellers

[ 0 ] October 7, 2011

South Africa has a reputation for being dangerous – but it’s important to have an open mind and remember that the majority of visitors have no trouble at all.

Robberies happen in every city, you just need to be sensible and air on the side of caution. Read on for our top tips and advice on staying safe. Chances are you’ll love every minute. We did!

Travelling to South Africa - Fabulous Travel Guide

* Use the Baz Bus

Worried about travelling alone? The Baz Bus is a great way to get around as it’s door-to-door. No need to wait around in bus shelters late at night – simply book the bus and it will pick you up at your hostel.

* Don’t walk around at night

The divide between rich and poor is vast – yet they live in such close proximity to each other. One minute you’re walking past penthouse apartments and luxury villas, the next you’re in a township where kids run after you begging for food.

* Be careful at ATMs

You’re at your most vulnerable when withdrawing cash. Don’t let anyone ‘help’ you use ATMs (it’s normally a scam) or stand too close. Put your cash in a money belt under your clothes and head straight to your hostel.

* Girls, use your bra!

Just withdrawn lots of money? Discreetly tuck it into your bra. It may sound a little extreme but if someone’s robbing you, it’s the perfect hiding place. TOP TIP Always keep some cash on your person in case they’ve seen you at the ATM.

* Don’t give homeless kids money

Sadly there are many homeless children on the streets – but it’s important not to give them cash. If you want to help, buy them food or ask if there’s anything you can do for them. Lots of hostels encourage travellers to donate clothes so do as much as you can to help.

* Walk with purpose

Don’t stand in the street holding a map or wander round aimlessly taking photos. Do your best to fit in, walk with purpose and be firm if anyone tries to hassle you.

* Buy first-class train tickets

First-class train tickets are nothing like the ones in the UK but it’s worth spending a little extra to sit in a quieter cabin. You’ll still be hassled by plenty of interesting characters trying to sell you anything from blocks of cheese to DVDs.

* Don’t flaunt your camera/jewellery

Keep anything of value out of sight and don’t flaunt expensive jewellery and handbags. This attracts opportunists and you could be putting yourself at risk.

* Remember to have fun!

South Africans are some of the friendliest people we’ve come across so go with an open mind, soak up the culture and enjoy every minute. You’ll come away smiling.

Looking for the best places to visit in South Africa? Whether you want to surf your way along the Garden Route, drive along the Wild Coast or go as far north as Sodwana Bay, we’ve come up with a list of must-see places.

1. Cape Town

Cape Town is an essential stop for all backpackers visiting South Africa. Hike up Table Mountain, visit the infamous prison on Robbin Island, go cage diving with Great White sharks or dance ’til dawn on Long Street. Whatever you fancy, Cape Town is sure to deliver.

2. Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is often overlooked by travellers as it’s slightly off the beaten track. However it’s easily accessible by car and the Baz Bus organises transfers from George. Watch meerkats wake up in the wild and explore the jaw-dropping Cango Caves.

3. Nature’s Valley

Get ready for breathtaking views, fabulous hiking trails and one of the prettiest hostels we’ve seen in South Africa. Trust us, this place is likely to capture your heart so get ready to extend your stay.

4. Victoria Bay

Victoria Bay is a heaven for nature lovers. Whether you want to hit the surf, try your hand at fishing or camp up on the clifftops, this little cove is well worth a visit.

6. Jeffreys Bay

If surfing’s your thing then you can’t miss Jeffreys Bay! The supertubes are legendary, the surf schools are intense and the atmosphere couldn’t get more laid back. Try and get there for the Billabong Surf Competition held every July.

7. Port Elizabeth

Okay, so there’s not a great deal to see here BUT it is where you can book cheap safaris to Scotchia Game Reserve and Addo Elephant Park.  Amazing.

Cage diving with Great White sharks in South Africa

[ 7 ] July 29, 2011

Fancy cage diving with Great White sharks? South Africa is one of the best places in the world to see these impressive creatures in all their glory.

Divers are taken to a nature reserve near Dyer Island – famously known as Shark Alley – which protects sensitive marine life. Once the boat is anchored and the bate is thrown in, sharks as big as 13ft begin to circle the boat.

What to expect

The cage, which holds a maximum of 5 people, floats on the surface so there’s no need for diving equipment or PADI certificates. Guides will shout when the shark’s approaching and you’ll duck under to see it swim past in all its glory.

Booking your tour

Look out for special offers and group discounts. We highly recommend White Shark Ecoventures. Not only are the guides brimming with knowledge and enthusiasm, the tour itself is well worth the 1000ZAR (£90).

Price includes transport to and from Cape Town, a light breakfast with tea and coffee, lunch, beers and even a whale watching stop in Hermanus on the way home. A DVD of the dive can also be purchased for 300RAZ (£28).
