Hurricane Rina to hit Cancun in next 24 hours

Hurricane Rina is hurtling towards Cancun, a popular tourist resort in Mexico.

The storm, which has sustained winds of up to 110 miles per hour, is expected to hit the Caribbean coast in the next 24 hours, prompting the Mexican government to issue travel warnings.

It has already brushed Nicaragua and Honduras, where dozens of people have been reported killed by flooding and mudslides.

Forecasters predict it will strengthen as it nears the Mexican coast today before hurtling towards Cozumel, another popular resort in Mexico.

Brad Pitt boosts hotel bookings in Glasgow

Brad Pitt has apparently boosted tourism in Glasgow – with hotel bookings at an all-time high.

The actor, 47, stayed in the city in August to film his latest movie World War Z – and it’s thought to have increased the number of visitors.

‘We welcomed Brad Pitt and more than 1,000 production staff working on Hollywood blockbuster World War Z, which generated significant business for the city’s hotels,’ Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, tells the Daily Mail.

‘Not only are our hotel bookings at an all-time high, Glasgow is now also the busiest city in Scotland.’

According to the latest statistics, Glasgow has filled more hotel rooms than Edinburgh, generating a whopping £180million in 2011.

Icelandic volcano sparks ash cloud fears

Remember the ash cloud? Well, another volcano in Iceland is threatening to erupt – and experts fear it could dwarf last year’s natural disaster.

Seismologists are watching rumblings beneath a volcano named Katla on the southern edge of Iceland where several small earthquakes have been detected.

‘It is definitely showing signs of restlessness,’ Pall Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, tells the Daily Mail.

Worringly, Katla has a larger magma chamber than Eyjafjallajokull – the volcano responsible for last year’s ash cloud – and experts fear it could cause havoc if it erupts.

Disaster officials are now preparing evacuation plans and have set aside temporary housing but it’s thought residents would only have about an hour to flee…

Ryanair to remove toilets on flights

Ryanair has announced plans to reduce the number of bathrooms on its planes to make way for more seats.

Chief Executive Michael O’Leary wants to ‘recertify’ the Boeing aircraft to enable 6 extra seats to be installed – leaving just one bathroom between 200 customers.

‘We very rarely use all three toilets on board our aircraft,’ he tells the Daily Mail. ‘[It] would fundamentally lower air fares by about 5 per cent for all passengers – cutting £2 from a typical £40 ticket.’

Mountain biker Evan van der Spuy got the shock of his life when an antelope crashed into him during a race in South Africa.

The cyclist was competing in the Time Freight MTB Express at Albert Falls Dam when a red hartebeest charged across the plain and knocked him to the ground.

Footage of the incident was caught on camera by fellow cyclist Travis Walker, who was recording the race for a marketing company sponsoring the event.

Fortunately, Evan, 17, didn’t suffer any serious injuries apart from mild concussion and whiplash. He was treated in hospital and released the next day. SEE VIDEO HERE

Louis Walsh has unwittingly boosted tourism in Spain by taking his X Factor group to Barcelona for ‘bootcamp’.

The X Factor judge, 59, revealed the exotic destination during last week’s show and it’s thought bookings to the city have  soared by 30% as a result.

Flight comparison site Skyscanner believes that viewers are being influenced by the ITV show, selecting destinations that the judges are picking.

And it’s not only Louis Walsh who has pulling power. Kelly Roland, who is taking the girls’ category to Miami, is said to have boosted sales by 20%, while flights to LA received a 10% spike thanks to Gary Barlow’s decision to whisk the boys off to the USA.
